The idea that society/civilisation plummeted into near chaos with the collapse of Rome is a misconception that seems to be propagated by school history syllabuses (at least when I was at school), to make things nice and simple

I was told the same at school, I think we got the impression that most people at the time were living in mud holes in the ground and all the monks retreated to fortress monasteries for protection. It wasn`t until a few years after I left school (many years ago) that I started reading up on the period and realised what a load of old tosh I`d been taught. Teachers my arse

That's what I was taught in school in Plymouth about the peoples west of the Tamar ...

That may be true, historians still haven`t worked out the purpose of all the fogues` which litter the area down here. I didn`t bite at your slippery remark though as I`m from Plymouth as well
I am reliably informed that Union Street during the dark ages was a long street of mud huts complete with the ubiquitous puddles of vomit, rows of hookers and moorish sailors looking for a cheap shag...nothing changes

No was pretty much like that in 86/7 when i was living on 'the Street' .

Purpose of fogues was to provide tourist accomadation, caravans only being allowed in Cornwall after the 'invention' of the wheel there in 1875 . No idea what the collective known for janners is , but suspect a continuation of this thread will illicit a suiatble reponse from one of our pasty munchers.

It's kind of been covered already, but since I started it, yes, what we 30-somethings got taught at school was a little inaccurate when it comes to the time between 410 and 1066.

There are a few period and almost period written records, Bede, Gildas, Nennius, the Notitia Dignitatum and a few others, but there is a wealth of archeological info from finds like Sutton Hoo, etc. If you are interested, a quick look here...

Should give you the idea. Personally I've jumped between Late Roman/Arthurian and Viking over the years, but in more recent years have wound up doing more Live Roleplaying than reenactment. That said, it's still mostly historical based with a bit of Myth thrown in.

well, although i am reasonably new to all of this, from what i have read there seems to be a problem about too many SMGS and the like, and not enough bolt actions. :slap:

so hows this for an idea, scrap the MP5 (for sure, looks nothing like WW2 weaponry) and the AK-47, and make the only non-ww2 era weapons acceptable to be wood-effect bolt action rifles. (there are fine examples on the market for reasonable prices, and if they are willing to fork out for kit, then it wouldn't be too much hassle for a wood effect rifle)

this would in effect stop newcomers arriving mostly with AK47s, and continuing to use it as it is acceptable.

If the SMG 'tidal wave' is to be stemmed, then it should begin at the source. (out of personal opinion i would always prefer a bolt action rifle to an SMG anyway........except the sten (im a fan of them! :good: ))

Just a thought, i wont be surprised if the idea gets shot down in flames :slap:

Not shot down, only that the observation we've made is that while the look a like system has been changed its largely a moot point as nobody ever turns up with Aks anymore and nobodies ever turned up with an Mp5

In fairness i wrote that list years ago when the options were marui m1a1, tanaka k98 or top mp40 (and one or two rare others), i think i've seen 4 aks used in the last three years.

Having said that the PBI list is considerably tighter than the initial CiA list and again we've never had anyone having an issue with it.
